The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies – A Review
Warning: May Contain Spoilers
The Lord of the Rings trilogy is probably the epitome of geekdom. The thrilling series comes to an end with the final installment of the trilogy made from the prequel novel. The cast has some faces that would be recognized by the fans of the original trilogy. Orlando Bloom reprises his role as the Mirkwood elf prince, Legolas Greenleaf, Sir Ian McKellan brings Gandalf back to life. There are also some new faces to the world of Tolkein. Lee Pace plays the role of Thandruil, the king of the Woodland realm (he was also in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy) and so many others.
Background:
The movie picks up right were the Desolation of Smaug ended. The dwarves have just landed themselves in the stone halls Erebor, where the leader of the dwarf expedition, Thorin Oakenshield, plans on reclaiming his throne as king under the mountain. With the awakening of the dragon Smaug, who had taken up resident in the riches that fill the stone halls of Erebor, the dragon flies to Laketown to destroy it and that’s where the final chapter begins.
The Movie:
At the beginning the movie shows the audience the burning and evacuation of Laketown. Smaug is burning down the city and Bard the Bowman (played by Luke Evans) fulfills a “family destiny” in shooting down Smaug with the last remaining black arrow. While the burning of Laketown is going on Bilbo stares down in disbelief while the rest of the dwarf hoard settles into their newly reclaimed homeland. The people of Laketown manage to escape to the ruins of Dale, a city between the Lonely Mountain (Erebor) and Laketown, with the intent of being aided by the Dwarves in their halls of stone. The good majority of the movie is spent with Bard and Thranduil trying to get Thorin to let them into the mountain for apart of the gold that he said they could have. There is a battle for the Lonely Mountain, which involves five armies (thus giving the movie its title). The five armies being: the Elves (Mirkwood (my favs)), the men of Laketown, Dwarves, Orcs, and Eagles.
My Opinion:
The battle is honestly the best part of the movie, who goes to a Lord of the Rings movie and not expect an awesome battle. The graphics were amazing, the actors were amazing Peter Jackson has a nack for picking very good actors. Howard Shore did an amazing job with the soundtrack, just like he did for the other five Middle Earth films. the scenery was amazing. The movie has a little bit of everything in it; good actors, dynamic characters, a little romance (not saying who between), and, of course, the triumph of good over evil. So over all an exceptional ending to a well loved series, I think if Professor Tolkien was alive he would be proud of how beloved his characters are.
Should you see it:
